Dai style Xin Yi was created by Dai Longbang in Shanxi province during the end of the Ming Dynasty and the beginning of the Qing Dynasty. His grand-father, Dai Guangqi was a successful candidate in the highest imperial exams during Emperor Wanli's reign, serving for a long time as an officer of the border patrol. Guangqi's scholarship and military skills were of the highest caliber. Emperor Wanli praised him as an accomplished and great scholar warrior. His son, Dai Yuncang inherited his families' education and martial arts, and was appointed as a 7th level governor, afterwards retiring into civil life and becoming a merchant.
Yunchang's son, Dai Longbang, continued his father's policy of not serving the Qing Dynasty or becoming an official of the Qing Dynasty. He was a patriot interested in overthrowing the Qing and restoring the Ming. He and Jian Boshan created a secret organization called the “Flaming Maple Room “ in the North to overthrow the Qing and restore the Ming, coordinating from afar with the south's Water Painting organization.
Dai Longbang, from when he was very young, studied literature and his family's secret marital art transmissions, along with Taoist dantian internal cultivation methods. He was a scholar warrior, a patriot seeking the restoration of the Ming dynasty. Sincere and honest, he befriended many educated, notable figures. In Henan, Lushan he opened an armed escort service. Father and son's martial skills were above the masses. Dai Longbang, Jin Shikui, Ma Xueli, Li Zhen, Niu Xijian, were known as the “five tigers of Zhongzhouâ€, renowned all over.
His son, Dai Wenxun, defeated a Shaolin monk specializing in Iron Head. The term "Carrying a bright emblem over Cangzhou" became known throughout the martial arts world. As long as the Dai emblem was carried, no one dared to cause trouble throughout the nine provinces and all was peaceful. Due to Longbang and his son's tremendous success, the emperor presented them with a vest and wanted to promote them as officials, but Dai Longbang declined.
The father and his two sons returned to Shanxi province where they secretly continued their study and practice of Xinyi Quan. Finally, after fifteen long years they authored the “Six Harmony Xin Yi Quan Manual†(å…åˆå¿ƒæ„拳谱) perfecting the style.
This become the Dai Family's exclusive, secret martial art that was forbidden to be taught to outsiders, with the sole exception haven been Li Laoneng of Hebei Province. This style was transmitted from Dai Wenxun to his son, Dai Wuchang, and his daughter, Dai Huanu, along with their clans brother Dai Liangdong, who finally transmitted it to his son, Dai Kui. Dai Kui was the first person to teach this martial art outside the family.
Dai Style Xinyi Fist is also known as "Six Harmony Xinyi Fist" or "Yi (Intention) Fist" for short. This style uses internal force as its foundation, external form is cultivated and spirit and form are perfectly united. When one part moves, all move in unison.
“The fist strikes out like the wind
Rising it is like the sleeping dragon ascending heaven,
Descending it is like thunderbolt striking the earthâ€
This style's martial quality is extremely strong evident. The more it is practised the more one appreciates its infinite marvelousness and subtlety. Dai Kui was the first one to overturn his family's rule and teach the art to outsiders to prevent the art from being lost. Dai Kui's requirements for his disciples were extremely strict. His teaching style was patient and he taught according to the condition and needs of each student, thus his disciples all reached very high levels. His actions and speech were closely observed and remembered. The relationship he had with his students surpassed that of a father and his son, a relationship difficult to express in words.
All through his life, Dai Kui was held in high regard. He deeply hated the scheming, bribery, and oppression of the people by government officials, bullies, and the aloof rich. He often aided the poor and hungry. He was righteous and honorable in his actions, and found great joy in helping others. He was a great hero of his age. Born in 1874 and dying of illness in Xiaoyi village in 1951, he was 77 years old. Although he is now resting beneath the earth, his righteous and heroic spirit lives on in the hearts of people.
